'What's with painting fake Rembrandts? I am Rembrandt!'

 

Rembrandt  being arrested for painting forgeries of his own canvases. Can an artist forge his own paintings? In Rome of the 1950s it was common knowledge that Giorgio de Chirico, in his Piazza di Spagna studio, recreated new versions of his metaphysical paintings of the World War I years because his more recent neo-classical canvases were finding few buyers. Sydney Nolan* the Australian painter redid, at a later date, the famous 1955 Ned Kelly series (the armour-clad legendary Australian outlaw) of paintings that he had sold off cheaply at the beginning of his career.
